What would I want to know about the someone who wrote this history if I myself had stumbled upon it one day? First of all, that I am an older man (I know . . . . this will disappoint those who expect some kind of CV or resume). As to my race, see item #4 below.
Second, that I prefer the written rather than the spoken word. Third, I'm an civil (or at times uncivil) engineer, with all the perfections and imperfections that such people have. And, I'm a creature of the west, having grown up on the eastside of New York City.
As to what I loosely espouse:
1. Live and let live. (however, this rule does not apply to rush-hour traffic or to football teams whose winning strategy consists of preventing other teams from playing football).
2. Let sleeping dogs lie. (or let them bark at passing caravans.)
3. There is enough to go around. It seems that northern Europeans had perfected just such an economic system, only to now see it in a rear-view mirror. It also seems that average Americans are seeing up close, how what once was an American Dream has become an American Nightmare.
4. Respect for all but fear of no one.
X. There are only 2 races in this world: the male race and the female race. To those who are offended by this statement, please see item #1 and books with titles like "Men are from Venus, Women are from Mars".
Corollary 4a: A man chases a woman until she catches him.
Some words about words: Ships and countries "navigate" their way, but people of average girth do not navigate; they just stumble along the road of life using whatever personal compass they have. Do you "negotiate" your way through life? and where are you "situated" in life right now if not a chair?
I dislike when perfectly fine words are appropriated by people who are trying to make $1 out of 15 cents (intellectually speaking).
