1954 Film-script for Li Xianglan: "Goldfish in New York" by Melchior Lengyel

Melchior Lengyel was a noted film-script writer. This 29 page story was mailed to Yamaguchi in Sep 1954 while she was still married to IsamuNoguchi and in New York City. It was found in the Noguchi Archive (who graciously forwarded a copy to me).

The interesting thing is that it does contain a certain amount of accurate biographical data (beginning with Yoshiko's nickname "Goldfish" which her fellow actors in Changchun used to call her back in 1939 when she began her film career) and continuing with "he sees a delicately little Japanese woman". Further on, he writes about the members of Yoshiko's family: "her four sisters - Kioko, Fumiko, Seiko, and Hiko, and one very old, very tiny Grandmother". This is but further confirmation of there being 5 girls in the Yamaguchi family (see The Mystery page for further analysis of this point).

Another interesting aspect is how elements of Yoshiko's personal and professional life found their way into many of the movie scripts she acted in.

Enjoy!
